Whether you worked in the field or in your masters house, you were still a slave. Those who worked in the fields and gins had long and hard days out in the burning sun. The had to haul 300 pound sacks of cotton for miles and if they wanted to make anything or earn anything of their own they had to stay up late into the night to do it. While it may seem like the house slaves had it a lot better, it was mostly only true on the outside. The house slaves were better dressed, but that was so they would be presentable to any company the master may have.
